Decorative stone is an aesthetically pleasing way to landscape hard to control areas of your lawn. One of the more difficult parts of the job however is determining the amount of stone you will need to cover the area you are landscaping. This is made especially difficult if the areas you are covering are of irregular shape. Luckily there is a fairly simple formula for calculating the amount of decorative stone you will need for each of your projects

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the overall dimensions of the area that you will be covering. Do a bit of guesstimating during this step with regards to the actual shape of the area. Pick which of the main types of area (circle, oblong, square, triange, or rectangle) it most resembles and then move to Step 2.

  2. Step 2

Calculate the total area in square feet of the section of land you will be covering in rock based on the formulas below:
    Area of a Circle = (Radius)^2 x 3.14
Area of a Square or rectangle = Length x Width
    Area of Oval = 0.8 x Length x Width
    Area of Triangle = 0.5 x Width x Height

  3. Step 3

Determine the depth of the rock that you will be installing and then convert it to feet. For example, if you want a two-inch depth of rock all the way around, then you would divide 3in/12in = 0.25 feet.

  4. Step 4

Multiply the results of Steps 2 and 3, then add an additional 10% to arrive at the total cubic of feet of rock you need. Divide this number by 27 to arrive at the total number of cubic yards that you will need to order from the landscaping provider.
