Stone is one of the most basic and oldest building materials and has been used throughout history all over the world. The material is most commonly used today for decorative and aesthetic purposes, such as landscaping applications that can substitute for other natural materials like grass or shrubs. The first step of the landscaping stone installation process is estimation of materials, and requires the calculation of total area. This task is generally straightforward, and can usually be accomplished using only simple construction and household tools.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
- Wood stakes
- Small sledgehammer
- Tape measure
- Calculator
-
Step 1
Mark the perimeter of the area to be covered with landscaping stone by driving stakes into the corners using the small sledgehammer.
-
Step 2
Measure the length and width (using the tape measure) of the area marked in Step 1.
-
Step 3
Multiply the length by the width (measured in Step 2) to find the total area in square feet. Break up areas of irregular shapes into spaces that can be easily calculated, and add their areas (in square feet) to find the total area to be covered with landscaping stone.
